Stay Openhearted

Life notoriously has a way of rubbing off your sharp edges.

I’ve always been a black and white type of person. Absolutes and rules mattered. Follow the rules, know what’s right and wrong, toe the line, and life will turn out better for you… or so I thought.

Like many of us, I’ve been affected by the last couple of years. Really affected. Germs scare me, so I put every cell of my being into not getting Covid. Most of my family got it, except me. I was pretty smug about it. Then, two years into the Pandemic, I finally succumbed. Humbled.

The racial inequities I have seen in my life have made me a sensitive person to the plight of people who don’t look like me. But the past two years have gutted me. Why are we so cruel to each other? Shook.

Since I got my voter’s registration card when I was 18, I have voted Republican. That’s what I do. I’m Republican and so is my family. Then came the Republican candidate who was a narcissistic bully. Mortified.

So, the last couple of years have taught me that I still have a lot to learn. And that being a learner is actually the best way to be — instead of being stuck in my old way of doing things. I want to move through life willing to be wrong, willing to change, willing to succumb. Openhearted.
